Catholicism and Fundamentalism

I would like to start this chapter with a reflection and some observations on the process followed by all of us who attended the May con- ference on Religious Fundamentalisms and the Human Rights of Women from which this book developed. I was absolutely fascinated by the fear that speakers—many of whom are among the most courageous women active in politics today—showed when confronted with time lim- its. Each of us was allotted a brief amount of time to speak, a time we felt was far too short to make our cases. In traditional fashion, we bemoaned our fate, and moderators, with greater and lesser success, slipped little yel- low pieces of paper to each person as their time elapsed. Fundamentalism

Here the author works to investigate the possibility that emerges in new forms of analysis that marry theological interventions with masculinities studies as a way to newly attend to patriarchy and fundamentalism. Utilizing feminist Catholic theology, the work addresses unique and recent problems that have emerged in the Church in the face of a new era that appears both more progressive and that has engendered conservative backlash. Roman Catholic Fundamentalism: What’s Sex (and Power) Got to Do with It?

Fundamentalism , type of conservative religious movement characterized by the advocacy of strict conformity to sacred texts. Once used exclusively to refer to American Protestants who insisted on the inerrancy of the Bible , the term fundamentalism was applied more broadly beginning in the late 20th century to a wide variety of religious movements. Indeed, in the broad sense of the term, many of the major religions of the world may be said to have fundamentalist movements. For full treatment of fundamentalism in American Protestantism, see fundamentalism, Christian. In the late 20th century the most influential—and the most controversial—study of fundamentalism was The Fundamentalism Project —95 , a series of five volumes edited by the American scholars Martin E. Marty and R. Scott Appleby.

By Karl Keating. Karl Keating defends Catholicism from fundamentalist attacks and explains why fundamentalism has been so successful in converting "Romanists". After showing the origins of fundamentalism, he examines representative anti-Catholic groups and presents their arguments in their own words. His rebuttals are clear, detailed, and charitable. Special emphasis is given to the scriptural basis for Catholic doctrines and beliefs. Few orthodox Catholics can imagine themselves leaving their religion for another. If, in the disorientation that comes between sleep and wakefulness, they imagine changing their spiritual allegiance, they see themselves waving a fond farewell to Rome Well, it was almost what we were looking for and walking but a short distance to something Romelike.
