Electrical connector

An electrical contact is an electrical circuit component found in electrical switches , relays , connectors and circuit breakers. When a pair of contacts touch, they can pass an electrical current with a certain contact resistance , dependent on surface structure, surface chemistry and contact time; [2] when the pair is separated by an insulating gap, then the pair does not pass a current. When the contacts touch, the switch is closed ; when the contacts are separated, the switch is open. The gap must be an insulating medium, such as air, vacuum, oil, SF 6. Contacts may be operated by humans in push-buttons and switches , by mechanical pressure in sensors or machine cams, and electromechanically in relays. The surfaces where contacts touch are usually composed of metals such as silver or gold alloys [3] [4] that have high electrical conductivity , wear resistance, oxidation resistance and other properties.

Quickly after it started to function, a connection to a 12 MVA transformer failed. This reduce energy to the principle compressors that operated the cryogenic system for cooling the tremendous conducting magnets in two sections. Though the topic is as previous as electrical energy, it has continued to evolve. It has, nevertheless, at all times been—and nonetheless is—on the periphery of different main know-how achievements. Consultants in electrical contact know-how can cite many such examples.

An electrical connector is an electromechanical device used to join electrical conductors and create an electrical circuit. The connection may be removable as for portable equipment , require a tool for assembly and removal, or serve as a permanent electrical joint between two points. Thousands of configurations of connectors are manufactured for power , data , and audiovisual applications. In computing, electrical connectors are considered a physical interface and constitute part of the physical layer in the OSI model of networking. In addition to the classes mentioned above, connectors are characterised by their pinout , method of connection , materials, size, contact resistance , insulation , mechanical durability, ingress protection , lifetime number of cycles , and ease of use. It is usually desirable for a connector to be easy to identify visually, rapid to assemble, inexpensive, and require only simple tooling. In some cases an equipment manufacturer might choose a connector specifically because it is not compatible with those from other sources, allowing control of what may be connected.

In electrical and electronics engineering , wetting current is the minimum electric current needing to flow through a contact to break through the surface film resistance at a contact. A thin film of oxidation, or an otherwise passivated layer, tends to form in most environments, particularly those with high humidity , and, along with surface roughness, contributes to the contact resistance at an interface. Failing to do this might result in switches remaining electrically "open" when pressed, due to contact oxidation. In some low voltage applications, where switching current is below the manufacturer's wetting current specification, a capacitor discharge method may be employed by placing a small capacitor across the switch contacts to boost the current through contact surface upon contact closure. A special circuit is utilized for turbines and generators to introduce current through the brushes into the shaft to prevent this.
