Intelligence and Spirit , —

Urbanomic x Sequence Press. Where humanists once reproached idealism for investing thought with a motive force expropriated from human thinkers, posthumanists reduce thinking to a power of prehension exercized by matter. Intelligence and Spirit subverts both of these reductions: it re-invents idealism as a philosophy of intelligence that is also the intelligence of philosophy. Through stunning readings of Kant, Hegel, and especially Plato, Reza Negarestani shows that the freedom proper to the subject and the power proper to the object are unintelligible if separated from the movement of an intelligence that is both unnatured and unnaturing. Just as the function of intelligence cannot be naturalized, the activity of spirit cannot be culturalized.

Intelligence and Spirit - Ebook

In Intelligence and Spirit Reza Negarestani formulates the ultimate form of intelligence as a theoretical and practical thought unfettered by the temporal order of things, a real movement capable of overcoming any state of affairs that, from the perspective of the present, may appear to be the complete totality of its history. This remarkable fusion of continental philosophy in the form of a renewal of the speculative ambitions of German Idealism, and analytic philosophy in the form of extended thought-experiments and a philosophy of artificial languages, opens up new perspectives on the meaning of human intelligence, and explores the real potential of posthuman intelligence and what it means for us to live in its prehistory. A critique of both classical humanism and dominant trends in posthumanism that formulates the ultimate form of intelligence as a theoretical and practical thought unfettered by the temporal order of things.

The history of philosophy conceived as the elaboration of a program for artificial general intelligence; intelligence understood as the impersonal and collective evolution of a thought that constructs itself according to a view from nowhere and nowhen. Reza Negarestani is an Iranian philosopher who has contributed extensively to journals and anthologies and lectured at numerous international universities and institutes. In continuity with this concern to articulate the local and global and to mitigate local constraints on knowledge, his current philosophical project is focused on rationalist universalism, beginning with the evolution of the modern system of knowledge and advancing toward contemporary philosophies of rationalism, their procedures, and their demands for special forms of human conduct. Where humanists once reproached idealism for investing thought with a motive force expropriated from human thinkers, posthumanists reduce thinking to a power of prehension exercized by matter. Through stunning readings of Kant, Hegel, and especially Plato, Reza Negarestani shows that the freedom proper to the subject and the power proper to the object are unintelligible if separated from the movement of an intelligence that is both unnatured and unnaturing.

8. Philosophy of Intelligence

I was narrowly interested in what he had to say about the concept of intelligence, and specifically how a philosopher of that kind would talk about AI and AGI. Thankfully I am somewhat familiar with philosophy and neorationalist discourse, where Negarestani is one of the main players. Of course, you could never expect to see Eliezer Yudkowsky, who is explicitly mentioned in the book, in the same room as someone who pays any mind to Kant or Hegel, but there are those of us who want to handle philosophy but still primarily consider themselves technical people, and we could really benefit if the book was just slightly more didactic. Thankfully many parts and pieces here are self-contained. It relies on examples of non-conceptual intelligences that are obviously just as fictional as AGI.

A critique of both classical humanism and dominant trends in posthumanism that formulates the ultimate form of intelligence as a theoretical and practical thought unfettered by the temporal order of things. In Intelligence and Spirit Reza Negarestani formulates the ultimate form of intelligence as a theoretical and practical thought unfettered by the temporal order of things, a real movement capable of overcoming any state of affairs that, from the perspective of the present, may appear to be the complete totality of history. Intelligence pierces through what seems to be the totality or the inevitable outcome of its history, be it the manifest portrait of the human or technocapitalism as the alleged pilot of history. Building on Hegel's account of Geist as a multiagent conception of mind and on Kant's transcendental psychology as a functional analysis of the conditions of possibility of mind, Negarestani provides a critique of both classical humanism and dominant trends in posthumanism. The assumptions of the former are exposed by way of a critique of the transcendental structure of experience as a tissue of subjective or psychological dogmas; the claims of the latter regarding the ubiquity of mind or the inevitable advent of an unconstrained superintelligence are challenged as no more than ideological fixations which do not stand the test of systematic scrutiny.

Intelligence and Spirit

How does a book arrive in the world? The deep freeze on research that constituted the first Winter of AI stunted philosophical progress on the relation between computation, mind and language. A fertile ground for collaboration frosted over while research continued strictly within disciplinary silos. This spirit of connective thought did not thaw off until the last decade or two, in which a productive interplay between computer science, mathematics, logic, cognitive science, and philosophy has once again emerged.

Intelligence & Spirit (by Reza Negarestani): some notes and discussions
