Eliza blogged about her favorite moments at ALA a couple of weeks back, but I wanted to give a quick shout-out to mine: meeting Daniel Handler , who readers might know better as Lemony Snicket. I have never been so entertained watching an author sign books before: Handler took time to joke with everyone, interrogating the woman in front of me about the man whose heart she broke most recently and teasing me about the illegible handwriting on the Post-It that was supposed to show him how to spell my name.
It received a Michael L. Printz Honor and a feature film starring Hailee Steinfeld was in the works, and was meant to be released in early Min Green and Ed Slaterton, a high school junior and senior basketball jock , respectively, ended their relationship, which lasted from October 5 to November The story takes the form of a letter , with Min writing to Ed explaining why they had broken up. The letter accompanies a box full of minor objects that narrates the progress of their relationship, and is returned to Ed at the end of the letter.

To live among things that make you gasp with delight? She is such a magnanimous artist. She invites us, welcomes us, into the most intimate, unprotected place of all: daydreams.
Who can resist her? Her most recent collaboration with Handler is Weather, Weather an evocative exploration of physical environments from around the world that offers a tender reflection on the passing of seasons, perspective, and memory.
She also collaborated with choreographer John Heginbotham on a ballet inspired by her work The Principles of Uncertainty. In addition to performing in the ballet, she created the costumes, sets, and libretti. Kalman created two monthly online columns for the New York Times : the first, The Principles of Uncertainty, was a narrative journal of her life; the second, And The Pursuit of Happiness, was a yearlong exploration of American history and democracy beginning with a story on the inauguration of Barack Obama.
Both columns are now collected in book form. She lives in Manhattan where she teaches graduate design at the School of Visual Arts. She lives and works in Portland, Oregon. In this episode of Epiphany, Kalman wrestles with questions of identity, art, existence and mortality.

Why We Broke Up
In a sec youll hear a thunk. At your front door, the one nobody uses. Itll rattle the hinges a bit when it lands, because its so weighty and important, a little jangle along with the thunk, and Joan will look up from whatever shes cooking. She will look down in her saucepan, worried that if she goes to see what it is itll boil over. I can see her frown in the reection of the bubbly sauce or whatnot. But shell go, shell go and see. You wont, Ed.
Hander offers a heartbreaking, bittersweet, and compelling romance with a unique angle and flare. A poignant, exhilarating tale of a love affair gone to the dogs. Like the perfect breakup song, this turns the searing experience of losing your heart into a cathartic work of art. This poignant, bittersweet novel centers on a box of objects infused with memories of her brief, unforgettable love. It's more difficult to take such an everyday tragedy with a predictable ending and elevate it to an end point of enduring, emotionally effective art. Daniel Handler is the author of the best-selling 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' under the pen name of Lemony Snicket , a collection of books for children.
