This paper performed a detailed study on the fundamental properties and thermal conductivity of autoclaved aerated concrete AAC self-insulation block, and the mechanical properties and heat transfer resistance of the AAC self-insulation block masonry. Different kinds of joints and the plastering surface were used to build the masonry specimens. The distinctive feature of the blocks and mortars is the lower thermal conductivity with expected strength. Compared to those with larger thickness of insulation mortar joints, the masonry with thin-layer mortar joints had better compressive performance and lower shear strength.
Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) Block and its Masonry
Autoclaved aerated concrete AAC , a potential building material, is gaining popularity due to its lightweight, thermal insulation and sound absorption qualities. This article describes the experimental evaluation and statistical variation of useful mechanical properties of AAC and its thick mortar a mixture of cement, sand and water based masonry. The following properties of AAC blocks were evaluated: moisture content, initial rate of absorption, water absorption, dry density, compressive strength and tensile strength. For AAC masonry, the following properties were evaluated: compressive strength based on prism specimen test, tensile bond strength based on cross-couplet specimen test and shear bond strength based on triplet specimen test. A simple analytical model has been also proposed to evaluate the elastic modulus of masonry prism. The results indicate that there is a positive correlation between the strength of mortar and AAC masonry.

Autoclaved aerated concrete AAC is made with fine aggregates, cement, and an expansion agent that causes the fresh mixture to rise like bread dough. In fact, this type of concrete contains 80 percent air. In the factory where it is made, the material is molded and cut into precisely dimensioned units. Key aspects of AAC, whether designing or building with it, are described below:. Durability and dimensional stability. A cement-based material, AAC resists water, rot, mold, mildew, and insects. Units are precisely shaped and conform to tight tolerances.
