An autocratic leadership style is similar to an authoritarian leadership style. Autocratic leaders rely on specific rules, policies, and procedures to govern all processes within the workplace. To be effective, the leader must be able to have proven competencies in their field, as they are responsible for making most of the decisions in the workplace. Instead of there being a democratic process for teams, there are no group positions of leadership with the autocratic style. Everything rests with the leader.

Autocratic leadership is very similar to the authoritarian leadership style. In this type of leadership, the rules and procedures that teams use are quite rigid. That means there is a priority on consistency, with each team member performing their job functions in a similar way. That consistency leads toward corporate success.
Autocratic leadership tends to create a negative image of leadership to most people. Yet, while the leadership style is not generally favored in discussion and analysis, it is still a prevalent leadership style in modern corporate culture. But are the associations with control and power accurate, or do they represent a misleading image of this leadership theory?
Under this style, leader concentrates all authority in himself, instructs subordinates as to what to do, when to do it; how to do it, etc. He also exercises close supervision and control over his subordinates. Subordinates are expected to do what they are told. The autocratic leader accomplishes the results through the use of authority, fear of deprivation, punishment and such other negative rewards. As it is negative in character, authoritarian approach will succeed only in the short run.
