Water: Analysis, Treatment, and Reuse

When we refer to water purification, it makes little sense to discuss the subject without first identifying the contaminants that we wish to remove from water. Also, the source of the water is of importance. Our discussion at this point focuses on drinking water. Groundwater sources are of a particular concern, because there are many communities throughout the U. The following are some of the major contaminants that are of concern in water purification applications, as applied to drinking water sources, derived from groundwater. Heavy metals represent problems in terms of groundwater pollution. The best way to identify their presence is by a lab test of the water or by contacting county health departments.

Those who are generally familiar with this field will immediately embrace the subject as a treatise on solid-liquid separations. However, the subject is much broader, in that the technologies discussed are not just restricted to pollution control hardware that rely only upon physical methods of treating and purifying wastewaters. The book attempts to provide as wide a coverage as possible those technologies applicable to both water e. The methods and technologies discussed are a combination of physical, chemical and thermal techniques. There are twelve chapters. The first of these provides an orientation of terms and concepts, along with reasons why water treatment practices are needed.

Water quality is an important issue and its degradation is a major threat for everyone. A large quantity of water is wasted as wastewater arising from several activities such as industrial, agricultural, and so on. The environmental pollution arising from the discharge of untreated wastewater is increasing and the quest for finding different water treatment methods is highly encouraged. In this special issue of this journal we are seeking to highlight the new studies and researches covering our topic. Journal overview. Special Issues.

This chapter also sets the stage for the balance of the book by providing an organizational structure to the subjects discussed.

The development and implementation of water treatment technologies have been mostly driven by three primary factors: the discovery of new rarer contaminants, the promulgation of new water quality standards, and cost. For the first 75 years of this century, chemical clarification, granular media filtration, and chlorination were virtually the only treatment processes used in municipal water treatment. This paper identifies and discusses some of these "emerging" technologies. For a new technology to be considered it must have advantages over traditional treatment processes. These can include lower capital and operations and maintenance costs, higher efficiency, easier operation, better effluent water quality, and lower waste production.

The water plant has the ability to produce up to 22 million gallons of safe drinking water every day. On average only about 3 million gallons per day are made in the winter; however during the hot summer months when there is an increased demand for lawn irrigation water produced can exceed 10 million gallons per day. Devices known as programmable logic controllers PLCs that are networked together with other PLCs control the water treatment plant and the treatment processes. The PLCs track over 1, signals or data points to ensure optimized treatment.

This book discusses major technological advances in the treatment and re-use of wastewater. Its focus is on both novel treatment strategies and the modifications and adaptions of conventional processes to optimize the treatment of a complex variety of pollutants, including organic matter, chemicals and micropollutants in different water resources, as well as the integration of water treatment with bioelectricity production. Written by leading researchers in the field, it will be of interest to a wide range of researchers in both industry and academia. His research interests include membrane separation processes, water and wastewater treatment processes, biological processes, advanced oxidation processes, solid waste treatment and management, and green technology for climate change adaptation. He has authored more than 45 journal articles and 10 chapters and holds 2 patents. His research interests include membrane technology for water and wastewater treatment and reuse, landfill technology for solid waste disposal, greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste, and wastewater management.

This book presents the basic principles for evaluating water quality and treatment plant performance in a clear, innovative and didactic way, using a combined approach that involves the interpretation of monitoring data associated with i the basic processes that take place in water bodies and in water and wastewater treatment plants and ii data management and statistical calculations to allow a deep interpretation of the data. The major concepts are illustrated by 92 fully worked-out examples, which are supported by 75 freely-downloadable Excel spreadsheets. Each chapter concludes with a checklist for your report.
