Advisor: Robert A. Copyright National Humanities Center, By January , the American colonies were in open rebellion against Britain. Yet few dared voice what most knew was true — they were no longer fighting for their rights as British subjects. They were fighting for independence.

Thomas Paine publishes "Common Sense"

Although it has not always been the case in the past, Thomas Paine now tends to be viewed as more than a pamphleteer. The fact that he never wrote a theoretical treatise about the social contract but instead included pages presenting elements of theory on which he relied to present his arguments in the polemical works he published forces the reader to piece together the parts of his theory scattered throughout his various writings. To a certain extent they make up a system of thought that can be reconstructed, although it is not fully consistent. Paine started to define the content of the agreement on which a legitimate government should be based in in Common Sense. He then developed this initial position mainly in Dissertations on Government , in Rights of Man — , and in Dissertation on the First Principles of Government

Thomas Paine’s Reflections on the Social Contract: A Consistent Theory?

Other works that contributed to his reputation as one of the greatest political propagandists in history were Rights of Man , a defense of the French Revolution and of republican principles, and The Age of Reason , an exposition of the place of religion in society. Thomas Paine was an English-American writer and political pamphleteer. Thomas Paine arrived in the American colonies in , as the conflict between aggrieved colonists and Britain was reaching its height. But the plan backfired, and the bones were lost. Paine was born of a Quaker father and an Anglican mother. His formal education was meagre, just enough to enable him to master reading, writing, and arithmetic. At 13 he began work with his father as a corset maker and then tried various other occupations unsuccessfully, finally becoming an officer of the excise.

Thomas Paine

January 29, ] [Note 1] — June 8, was an English-born American political activist , philosopher , political theorist , and revolutionary. He authored Common Sense and The American Crisis — , the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution , and helped inspire the patriots in to declare independence from Great Britain. Padover described him as "a corsetmaker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination".

Common Sense [1] is a page pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in — advocating independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen Colonies. Writing in clear and persuasive prose, Paine marshaled moral and political arguments to encourage common people in the Colonies to fight for egalitarian government. It was published anonymously on January 10, [2] at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places.

His Common Sense was the most widely read pamphlet of the American Revolution; his Rights of Man was the most famous defence of the French Revolution and sent out a clarion call for revolution throughout the world. He paid the price for his principles: he was outlawed in Britain, narrowly escaped execution in France, and was villified as an atheist and a Jacobin on his return to America. Paine loathed the unnatural inequalities fostered by the hereditary and monarchical systems. He believed that government must be by and for the people and must limit itself to the protection of their natural rights.
