Printable version PDF. Soil stabilization is used to improve the shear strength, stability, and durability of native subgrade soils basement material to meet the pavement design requirements and for successful pavement performance. Stabilization methods include reworking existing soils by blending or increased compaction mechanical stabilization , or by adding a stabilizing agent chemical stabilization.

This is often the result of cave-ins due to poor soil stabilization methods. Fortunately, there are a number of things a company or crew can do to ensure the soil in a worksite remains stable enough for heavy machinery to operate without increasing the risk of cave-ins.

Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Frequency of sampling should be based on the uniformity of soil, intent and level of investigation required and the potential for detrimental reactions with the soil during chemical stabilization processes. A general recommendation on frequency of sampling based on varying soil conditions is given in Table 1. Guideline regarding spacing between sampling locations

Fazal E. Calcium-based stabilizer materials CSMs exhibit pozzolanic properties which improve the properties of clayey soils by hydration, cation exchange, flocculation, pozzolanic reaction, and carbonation. In this comprehensive review, comprising over past three decades from to , a mechanistic literature of expansive soil stabilization by incorporating CSMs is presented by reviewing published research articles. The advantages and disadvantages of CSMs as the ground stabilizing agent are succinctly presented, and the major outcomes of physicochemical effects on soil properties are discussed in detail. After blending with CSM, the main and interaction effects on soil properties with focus on chemical processes such as X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction analyses, and microstructure interaction by using scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis have been reviewed in light of findings of past researchers. This work will help geotechnical engineers to opt for suitable CSM in the field of geoenvironmental engineering in committing to sustainable construction of civil engineering structures over expansive soils.
Soils are made stronger and more durable by mixing additive materials. In particular, the use of waste provides environmental and economic advantages for this case. Wastes form in large quantities, however, which creates storage problems. To objective of this study is to research the availability of industrial wastes for soil stabilization. An experimental study was conducted on granular soil specimens mixed with industrial wastes such as marble and granite dust, boron waste, and fly ash in different ratios. Each mixture used two waste materials together. Specifically, fly ash was used with three additional waste materials because of its pozzolanic characteristics.
Each of the key types of inorganic binder stabilisers are discussed at length including specific sections on high-calcium and naturally hydraulic hydrated limes.
Application of Microbial Bioenzymes in Soil Stabilization
Clayey soils are usually stiff when they are dry and give up their stiffness as they become saturated. Soft clays are associated with low compressive strength and excessive settlement. This reduction in strength due to moisture leads to severe damages to buildings and foundations. The soil behavior can be a challenge to the designer build infrastructure plans to on clay deposits. The damages associated with expansive soils are not because of the lack of inadequate engineering solutions but to the failure to identify the existence and magnitude of expansion of these soils in the early stage of project planning.
