The heterogeneity in the practice of diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer HNC is known and expected to be inversely correlated with the level of evidence on a given topic. Literature on various aspects of management of HNC were previously published, but were usually restricted within narrow foci.

The core function of a multidisciplinary team MDT is to bring together a group of healthcare professionals from different fields in order to determine patients' treatment plan. HNC often compromise relevant structures of the upper aerodigestive tract involving functions such as speech, swallowing and breathing, among others. The impairment of these functions can significantly impact patients' quality of life and psychosocial status, and highlights the crucial role of specialized nurses, dietitians, psycho-oncologists, social workers, and onco-geriatricians, among others.

It is now getting on for ten years since the first edition of this excellent work appeared. That effort broke new ground in several ways, chief of which was the extended collaboration of two experts in the fields of radiation oncology and surgery to document their long experience in working with head and neck cancer patients. In the tight anatomic compartments of the head and neck a variety of cancers originate and metastasize regionally.

This book identifies key treatment challenges and unique care considerations in patients with head and neck cancers, providing a comprehensive guide to patient management that illustrates the critical importance of a multidisciplinary approach in achieving optimal oncological, functional, and survival outcomes. It covers all relevant specialties, including dental and oral medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and reconstructive surgery. It highlights the vital role played by ancillary head and neck cancer services, such as speech and swallowing therapy, occupational and physical therapy, and nutritional therapy in offering essential physical and psychological support from the time of diagnosis onward. The closing chapters address post-treatment issues, including those relating to survivorship, surveillance, and end-of-life care. Multidisciplinary care is perhaps even more important for patients with head and neck cancers than for other cancer patients, and in addressing all its aspects this book is invaluable for a wide range of practitioners. Maghami received her medical degree at Washington University, St. Louis, and continued her otolaryngology training at University of California, Los Angeles.

The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Approach and Quality of Care

The complexity of disease is, in part, due to the heterogeneity of organs and functions involved and the need for a multimodality approach. Furthermore, treatment goals — which include cure, organ, and function preservation, quality of life and palliation — must also be considered. Thus, optimal management of patients with HNC should involve a range of healthcare professionals with relevant expertise. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma HNSCC is a heterogeneous disease, encompassing a variety of tumors that originate in the hypopharynx, oropharynx, lip, oral cavity, nasopharynx, or larynx. The disease group as a whole is associated with different epidemiology, etiology, and therapy.
